| In the first half
of the interview, we basically reviewed the history of how exactly
WILDMAN became what he is now. In the second half, we will be
discussing his deep love for KISS, the band, and motorcycles.
And one thing we cannot forget to include is his relationship
with the one and only Ed "Big Daddy" Roth. |
-Just
Mach, Mach, and more Mach!
-
S:
So you like Motorcycles too?
W: Yep I do.
S: When did you get the Mach 3 you've got right now?
W: Just got it a couple years ago in '98.
S: You found that yourself?
W: Nah, I know a guy who had a whole bunch of them.
S: All "Mach?"
W: He's like one of those collector types. If I were to find
one, and if I actually did, the seller would charge me a
huge amount.
S: I agree, 'cause don't any of the Mach series cost a million
yen I bet.
W: At least a million. I was blessed by the grace of god
to of known a collector like him.
S: So have you always liked Kawasaki?
W: I only liked or was interested in Kawasaki.
S: Oh? And also I guess you liked the Mach 3 the best out
of the Mach series of motorcycles.
W: I like all Mach bikes, well maybe the Mach 3 the best.
I first saw one when I was in 8th grade or so, and back
in the day, when you talk about motorcycles, you only spoke
of 750cc, and the only 750cc that was talked about was the
CB750.
S: The 750 Rider! (The "750 Rider" was a Comic series for
10 yrs on the Weekly Shonen Champion from '75 - circa '85)
W: Hikaru, one of the characters, had a 750 and I just awed
over it every week. Coincidentally, one of my classmate's
brother was riding on a Mach SS 350 which is more commonly
know as Mach 2, and just fell in deep love with it ever
since.
S: Back in those days, there were only a few with low goosenecks...
W: Yeh I agree.
S: Was the Mach 2 already pretty low?
W: If anyone sees it now, we'd call it an up handle, but
back in the day, there were no other bikes with tail cowlings.
S: Like the CB750 goes down doesn't it?
W: Yeh and like the tail cowling with light on it was what
took me.
S: Oh really?
W: I actually went and looked up every Mach there was and
every class, from 250 - 750 were the fastest in the world.
S: I guess that's what got you then.
W: Yeh, and I looked in the catalogue, and it actually said
it does a quarter mile in 12.4"!
S: 12.4"!?
W: That was even faster than any high performance car, they'd
go maybe 15" and so this just got cupid to shoot and arrow
thru my heart.
S: And you were in love?
W: Oh absolutely, just Mach, Mach, MACH!
S: Were you riding a Mach before this one?
W: Yeh I was, well sort of. KH250. S: KH? You were on a
KH?
W: Yep, that's my first bike.
S: That's cool!
W: Then I got a Mach 2 350cc, and now the Mach 3.
S: I guess no interest in anything else than Kawasaki.
W: Yep, and I do like the Z2 and stuff but not to a point
of buying one.
S: That had the biggest Tail Cowling though,
W: But the Mach was better.(and points to an old catalogue)
S: I guess that was its sales point.
W: First ever with a Tail Cowling.
S: Was it this up handled?
W: Yep it was. After the KH, I got a white one of
these.
S: I guess you're still a tail fetish.
W: Oh yes, I even still got the tail.
S: You didn't sell it with the bike?
W: Nope it was a back up.
S: Gonna transplant it someday?
W: No, I'm going to keep it and look at it.
S: You like keeping memorabilia?
W: I still have the emblem of the Fello
S: You don't have one of the R32? |
|
W: Nah, but
I can get one anywhere though.
S: I agree. Are you going to keep the Mach as long as your
Mustang?
W: Don't have any plans to get rid of it.
S: What if you could get a Mach 1?
S: I agree. Are you going to keep the Mach as long
as your Mustang?
W: Don't have any plans to get rid of it.
S: What if you could get a Mach 1?
W: I ain't no collector. So, I try not to think about
it.
S: (Laugh)
W: Can't ride on all at once...
S: You only got one body.
W: Yeh but I had a time when I wanted all the Machs.
I even sat and admired my KH and 350 in front of my
house when I was working at the paint shop. |
|
S: (Laugh)
W: Did the Mirror mirror on the wall thing with my
bikes. (Laugh)
S: Got any photos?
W: Nope they are either one or the other.
S: What colors was the KH?
W: When I got it, it was red, but I painted it lime
green. And put a KH decal on it.
S: KHs gotta be Lime green! |
|
W: Everything
else was stock.
S: You like things to be stock?
W: No, but the Mach's got to be stock.
S: Got to? People custom it now a days, what do you think
of that?
W: Don't like it too much.
S: So it's a taboo to take the cowling off and make the
seat small?
W: I have no interest in long wheel bases. And yes, it is
a taboo.
S: Weren't you saying something like that about cars too?
W: That's why I got the R32 Skyline. The Mach's even shorter.
Shorter is better.
S: You like tweaking cars?
W: I do, but there are some cars that don't do much good
tweaking.
S: For now, you're in maintenance then.
W: And the two strokes are disappearing too.
S: The environment is important but, 2 stroke recycling
is too.
W: I just feel sorry for the kids who are going to
grow up w/o them.
S: Mopeds are two stroked. |
 |
W: I would
love to leave the feeling of the 2 stroke to my grandchildren...
-KISS
for life-
Wildman(hereby, W) Thank god I got this. (Yahoo!
Auction)
Shogo(hereby, S) A KISS jacket? I was just going to ask
you about KISS.
W Thank god no one else bidded.
S No one did?
W It's a rare jacket.
Kid Rocker(hereby, K) How much was it?
W It was only 24,999 yen.
S 24,999 yen? You must know how rare this is. |
|
W
There was one that was asking a lot of questions to the
owner though.
S How much did it start from?
W It started from about 4,000 yen.
S So what good is this?
W It's from Kasablanca records, in 78 when KISS first contracted
a record.
S Uh huh...
W This isn't some copy, but the real thing itself.
S There must be only a few of them out there.
W In Japan probably a handful, in the US it costs around
$300.
S Then you got a good deal!
W I was on auto-bid until 51,000 yen!
S When?
W During Lunch.
S (Laugh)
W If I didn't get it now, I knew I'd never get it ever.
S
Was it your first encounter?
W First outside the Encyclopedia.
S KISS has an encyclopedia?
W The KISSTORY
S ・・・。KISSTORY???
W There's the KISSTORY 1 & 2. They cost $150 each.
S Uh huh.
K Anything KISS it's on it.
S Like the HotWheels book.
W But it's like the Britannica.
S When did it get published?
W About 4,5 years ago.
S That's pretty recent.
W The first is a history book, and the second is a
novelty dictionary. |
|
S Which do
you like better?
W The second one.
S (Laugh)
W I haven't opened the first one.
S When did you start liking them?
W Probably the 70s. I was only a kid when they first got
together.
S Did you ever go see them?
W Nope didn't.
S Where did people get tickets?
W There were only a few shops where you could get them.
S Oh.
W The people who only did an allnighter waiting could get
the tickets.
W 3800 yen.
S You remember how much it cost?
W Yep.
S Why? Or HOW?
W I remember 'cause I couldn't get one. But I have a stub.
S Really? Is it in an album or something?
W It's in my cabinet.
S A KISS cabinet...
W It's a glass cabinet.
S Aside from the cars.
W It's about 6 feet tall, and 5 feet wide, but no books
fit in it.
S Then the KISSTORY is...
W It is one heavy book. I got it from this guy I knew.
S (Laugh)Did he get it for you?
W Yep, 1 for the show case, and 1 to read.
S So you have 4?
W No, I only have 1 KISSTORY 2, because there isn't an autograph
in it.
S But the autograph is a print though.
W I believe so, but it sure looks like the real thing.
S Weren't KISS at first glam rockers?
W Yeh I guess.
S They didn't wear make up for a while did they?
W 1996.
K Here come the years.
W Started in 73, recorded in 74, got going in 75, getting
known in 76, caught on fire in 77, and until the 80s, they
kept on burning. Had a 51 tour sold out record, and put
the BEATLES record to shame when they came to Japan.
S Oh damn, that's cool!
W Yep it is.
S What's your favorite song?
W Detroit Rock City.
S Detroit Rock City? Bed Rock city? Who?
W (Snicker)
S Listened to it but didn't know it.
K KISS doesn't sound as bad as they look do they? W It's
just plain old Rock'n'roll.
S I only know: "I, wanna Rock'n'roll All Ni-ght!"
W That's the last song of every show, Rock'n'roll all night!
S Really?
W It's always like that, and we get on the ground picking
confetti up.
S、K (LOL)
S Why? Isn't it better listening the song?
W I tell my wife to pick it all up. One bag from Tokyo,
from Kobe...
S But KISS didn't even touch them though.
W But as memorabilia.
S You still got them?
W Oh surely.
S In the closet?
W It's in a Ziplock in the Glass Case.
S In a Ziplock?
W I don't want to lose them ever.
S Do you want to be buried with them?
W I'd rather pass it on to my offspring.
S Oh ok.
W I'll tell my wife who will give the most money for what
beforehand though.
S How much stuff do you have?
W Not as many as my miniature cars.
-240
cars???-
S There were KISS Mini cars at one time weren't
there?
W Yeh, I bought 3 cases. S 240? They are mini cars for god's
sake.
W Yep, there were 50 cards, randomly selected. I wanted
all of them.
S There were 50?
W Cards. Trading Cards.
S There were only 4 cars though.
W I wanted card # 35 and I got so pissed off, I bought another
case.
S How many in a case?
W 60 or 80. And I got one more sitting here, and I won't
open it.
S No? Why?
W You can see what # it is by just looking.
S Haven't opened a single one?
W Some on display, but most of them aren't opened.
S Uh huh.
W A couple more at home.
S A couple? You mean a couple HUNDRED or so.
K You should sell'em.
W I've been thinking so often too.
S Nah, we need people like you in economic depression like
now.
W I just felt really dumb because I got the cards finally
but now stuck with 250 cars.
S Did you order them from the US?
W Yep. I did.
S You probably bought the most in Japan.
W I still got all of them too.
S Do you ever forget and mistakenly bid on one?
W No, I never forget.
K Why don't you open a booth on the 5F of Mister Craft?(HobbyShop)
W That's a good idea. But if I see one, I want it.
K Well you got to throw the old ones away.
W I'll just use the old one to be looked at.
S That's a KISS book?
W Yes.

-Love
Magazines-
S
You like magazines?
W Yep.
S What do you get every month?
W Model Cars, Car Magazine, Old Timers, stuff like
that.
S You like those too?
W I might buy Car Graphics sometimes.
S So you don't buy American Car mags at all?
W Well we get them here at MOON anyways.
|
 |
S No artsy
magazines?
W HotRod Magazines are more interesting.
K Yep they are.
S I ain't interviewin' you. I'm interviewing an artist right
now. Oh do you mind being called an artist?
W That's totally ok with me.
|
|
|
-To
Prospective Pinstripers-
S
What is the sudden rise in prospective pinstripers
these days?
W I know.
S I wonder what's feeding them?
W Pinstriping is one of those "looks easy" things.
That's why.
S Do you have any advice for them?
W I get phone conplaints all the time.
S Oh really?
W I would love to help but can't
|
 |
explain in words.
S What's a simple one?
W Try and practice drawing an even straight line.
S Staight?
W Stright, Curved whatever. Just try not to do anything
that looks too hard at first.
S I tend to power glide when I curve.
W Practice makes perfect.
|
|
K I was drawing, and I drew on my wall by mistake.
S Didn't you erase it?
K It's still there.
W Back of calendars or something.
S Can you get white gasoline somewhere?
W Yeh, go to a gas stand.
S You don't need so much though.
W Thinner's just as good. |
 |

-Listen
to KISS-
S You say you gotta think when you stripe. Could you elaborate?
W You gotta plan things ahead of time.
K Like how am I gonna take things from here.
W One thing is to think first of what kind of shape you
would want.
S If you make a mistake?
W Use it, and bluff it. Bluff is a big key here.
K It all depends if you can bluff or not.
W That is, I repeat, a very important point.
S Right turns, Left turns, which do you like better?
W I can do either one, but we're all human, we got our "can't
do's"
S Are you right handed.
W Yep I am.
S If you're right handed, then it must be nice to do right
turns.
W Basically, most likely so.
K I've never seen a lefty.
W In the states, there are a lot, but not as many in Japan.
S Any other trains of thought?
W Listen to KISS.
S I guess KISS is the key then.
K Woody Kobayashi told me to smoke to get better in pinstriping.
W You got to enjoy it, to get better at it.
S There must be likes and dislikes though.
W I just love striping on cars. That's my thing, and just
realized it too.
S Do you ponder that often?
W Striping Cars is the Thing. Striping here and there sucks.
K I thought you said...
W That's my hobby. That's what I like to do.
S,K (Laugh)
W You Don't get it do you?

-No
Brushes in the House-
S Do you have any pinstripe goods at home?
W Nope, maybe a name plate.
S So you never draw at home?
W It's my rule not to do so.
S Not even one Mack brush?
W Nope.
S Really?
W I'll do it here if I have to.
S Oh yeh, you live pretty close.
W I can't do it in the house!
S 'Cause you'll start thinking about KISS?
W (Laugh)That too, but I just can't concentrate at
home.
S I guess you switch to home mode then.
W Yep I try to switch back and forth.
K That's cool, I can't do that.
W That's cool too though. Open 24/7, I just can't
to that. |

|
-Love
Cars-
S Do you have any goals in life ahead?
W Goals? GOALS? I want to be known for how I draw.
S I think you've already achieved that goal.
W No no, I've only been doing this for 13 years, and I'd
love to get better and better.
S If anyone was going to be a pistriper now, then you'd
tell him to love cars then?
W That's a lil' extreme but if you don't like'em how are
you going to be able to paint'em?
S I see. W If you don't have the interest, you can't do
what I do.

-Wildman
has been born!-
S
When did you first go to Ed Roth's place?
W This is when I went to Vegas with some guys, and
they left me with Ed.
S You drove to Ed's house? Where?
W Utah.
S Oh, Mormons.
W He took me to his church.
|
|
S To the Church....
W Gave me the book.
S He gave you the name Wildman right?
W Yeh when I went to Vegas. He told me to drive. Never have
driven in the states until then.
S Ever been to the states at the time? W First time. And
so I said yeh sure.
S Did you have an Int'l Driver's Permit?
W Yep.
S You didn't know the roads though.
W No I didn't. He gave me directions, and went down the
freeway to Utah.
S Was he awake?
W At first he was, but towards the end, he was getting his
ZZZs.
S (Laugh)
W ZZZ and I drove too far.
S (Laugh)
W We did go too far. And so drove back.
S How far?
W Maybe about 10 miles or so.
S Oh, and you were homestaying or something?
W First few days in the states, drive, and went to Utah,
and called me the WILDMAN.
S He must of thought you were crazy, he told you to do so
though.
W He cooked me rice everyday I was there.
S I had an image that he would eat soup all the time.
W Potatoes, Fish, like stewed, and like not like cook cook,
but just prepared me meals everyday.
-The
teachings of Ed Roth-
S So did he teach you stuff from the first day?
W The day we got there, it was midnight so from the next
day, he taught me.
S
What did he teach you.
W Told me to write ABCDs.
S From Lettering then?
W Yep, from lettering.
S All day?
W Pretty much, and we were talking too so.
S Oh really?
W Do you have baseball in Japan? How about prowrestling?
That kind of talk.
S Wrestling?
W He seemed to like it a lot. He sure watched a lot
on TV.
S How long were you there?
W I think about a week.
S One week? |
|
W Yeh, something
like that.
S So you lettered on the first day, what was next?
W Pinstriped, lettered, vis a vis. He went out once in a
while.
S Left you alone in the house?
W Played with the cats while he was gone.
S (Laugh)
W Sunday we went to church.
S Did you learn anything from going to church?
W Something clicked in my head about lettering. I think
it was the air.
S Something changed before and after eh?
W Maybe like a spiritual experience.
S Was Ed Roth good at lettering?
W Shige san loves Ed's writing, his letters.
S Oh really?
W That's why he wanted me to start pinstriping.
S
Shige san told you to go to Ed Roth's place?
W Shige san knew Ed and I wasn't just starting out
either.
S How long had you worked?
W Maybe a year or so.
S Didn't learn too much about pinstriping over there
then? W Yes I actually did, but it is very hard to
explain in words. |
|
S What did
you learn the most from Ed?
W Not to stand out more than the host car.
S Hmmm...
W Pinstriping is just the side dish. The Car is the entree.
S Oh ok.
W Until then, I was deliberately making it the main dish.
-Ed
"Big Daddy" Roth-
 |
S
Is this Ed Roth's house? (pointing at photo)
W Yep, this cute little house.
S Was he living alone?
W He just got divorced back then, but he told me she
was on vacation.
S Brick, and I see nothing surrounding it.
W Yeh I know, it's in the middle of no where.
S How close was the nearest shop?
|
W The main
street was only a few 100 yards long.
S Oh, but there is a store nearby.
W Like a little shopping street.
S Can you walk there?
W A few minutes on car. Less than 10 but at least 5,6 minutes.
S Must be a nice place.
W Lots of turkeys. They've got a lot of turkey farms there.
S Were all the show cars made there?
W Show cars were made here but most of them in his California
days when he was young.
S He used to live there didn't he?
W But as a Mormon, he moved to Utah once he aged.
S Is there one thing other than pinstriping that caught
your eye about Ed?
W He took ultra quick showers. 1 minute showers.
S 1 minute!
W 1 minute.
S (Laugh)
W When we met in Vegas, we stayed in the same room for a
night, and he took a shower before me, turned it on, ...
Then off. Came out with a satisfied face, and was done.
S (Laugh)
W He was always like that.
S He must of washed really quick.
W He eats a whole lot too.
S I hear he stained his shirt day after day.
W Slowly but surely he ate huge quantities of food.
S And you followed right?
W Lots of ice cream. Like this one time he had a sundae
this(gestures) big.
S So he is an ultra fast shower taker but a slow eater.
W Yep something like that.
-Master
of the Mind -
S
There must of been a huge influence on you.
W I was the most influenced on the 3rd SCN when...
S The 3rd Street Car Nationals?
W Yes when I saw the demo he did.
S You weren't into pinstriping at the time?
W I was part timing with Shige san, but not until
them did I get a shock. |
|
S What was
so shocking?
W It's normal not to do a draft but . ... But. But. But...
S It was entertainment I had never seen before.
W I've had people watching at the paint shop but not at
such a show!
S And that when you wanted to do this as a job?
W Yes that's when I knew.
S I guess that was a cool shock then.
W That's just the thing I will never forget about Ed Roth.
S No matter how much you knew him, he was always above you.
W
But not only that, when I went over to the US with
him and watched Pink Panther, I almost died laughing.
S You like cartoons?
W I like comics, and I was just having such a good
time on the plane.
S Back to track, would you say Ed was kind of a master
to you?
W Yes I would
S Master.
W Yes, of the mind.
S Master of the Mind!
W He will always be one for me.
|
 |
-Ed
Roth for ever...-
S How did you hear the news?
W Shige san emailed me out of no where.
S Were you surprised?
W Yes I was!
S Did you notice him being sick beforehand?
W I was just that every year he came, he got slower and
slower and I thought that he was getting older and older,
and suddenly, died. I drank over it, and shed some tears.
S Did you put that picture there(pointing to it) after his
death?
W No, 'twas after the HCS in '99, he came down here, and
right before taking him to the Airport.
S I was there before he came here then?
W I wanted an autograph, and couldn't find anything else,
so I got it on it.
S No one ever speaks bad about him do they?
W I hear he was a radical guy when he was young though.
S (Laugh)
W In his latter years, he was like Uncle Rat Fink, but he
must of rocked the boat in the 60s! |
|
It felt as if Ed Roth and Wildman had some kind of strong relationship
between them, and also that "the Pinstriping should not over power
the car itself. I would of gone into talking about miniature cars
with him, but that would off taken up probably 3 - 5 times as
much space as this so, I left it for next time.
